A "datum" is a starting point or reference used by surveyors to measure the height or elevation of land in an area. It helps people compare different heights and understand how high or low a piece of land is compared to other places.
Before building a house on a hill, the surveyors use a known datum, like sea level, to measure the height of the land. This helps them understand how high the hill is and plan the construction of the house accordingly.

A datum, a datum, it's oh so grand,
A point of reference, for heights of land.
Surveyors use it, yes indeed,
To measure elevations, to help you succeed.
From sea level, or another spot,
A datum helps you know a lot.
Comparing heights, both high and low,
A datum guides you, wherever you go.
